In the mid-1880's, a group of Quakers headed west to settle a new colony in California. They settled against the hills and named the new township after Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier.

Whittier's Earliest Photographs
This fascinating DVD takes you back to those first days of Whittier with amazing images and stories from 1880 to 1913. Whittier Boulevard was still the El Camino Real and former Mexican Governor of California Pio Pico socialized with the Quakers at the Bailey's house.

Interview with... The Oldest Man In Whittier
Born and raised in Whittier, Monte Wicker isn't really "The Oldest Man in Whittier". But, he is old enough to have great stories about the people and places in the photographs, and his childhood neighbors did race horses on Whittier Boulevard with Don Pio Pico. In a revealing interview, historian Dorthea Boyd gets the fascinating facts from Monte about life in early Whittier.
